What inspired you to get into teaching?

Being a teacher assistant was the motivation for me to want to be a teacher who had the tools to instil lifelong learning into my students and see their transformation from Year 7 to Year 12 and beyond.

Why do you teach?

Teachers have the opportunity to help shape young minds and inspire the next generation. The impact this can have on students’ lives can be profound, whether it’s helping them overcome challenges or making learning engaging and enjoyable. Teaching is not just a job; it’s a rewarding vocation that allows you to contribute to society and make a lasting impact.

What's your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?

Teaching a student who was akin to a bee trapped in a bottle—restless and buzzing with energy. This student had unique strengths, particularly a dancing ability, so I tailored my teaching approach accordingly. This included presenting information via various channels such as traditional board explanations, detailed written notes, providing examples of commendable work and scaffolding learning step by step. With encouragement flowing freely, nurturing confidence and motivation, this student underwent a transformation and developed into a successful learner who navigated the challenges of high school. Their journey culminated in a solid Year 12 performance and the student’s family expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support I provided during the student’s crucial middle school years.

Have you received a special keepsake from your student/s that you treasure?

I received a "Tree of Life" necklace from the student and their family which was unexpected but valued to this day. It was made even more special by the gratitude again expressed by them at the Year 12 graduation of the student.

What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?

Teaching is not just a profession; it’s a calling. It brings challenges to embrace, victories to celebrate, and can be a rewarding journey.
