Behind each memento is always a unique story which I treasure. However, I have a card and gift from one female student which I hold very dear to my heart. This student was disengaged and her self-efficacy and perception of classroom learning in relation to her ambitions was low. My strategy to engage and motivate was to tap into her interests, but also make her feel safe.
Gradually her confidence grew and certainly having the student setting her own SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals meant that the regular feedback assisted in her motivation. Teaching is all about fostering and building positive relationships. It is all relational work. I pride myself on educating for deep hope and getting to know my students which in turn means that I know how they learn best.
