What inspired you to get into teaching?
When I was in primary school, I loved helping the students in the younger grades and would always play 'school'. I had wonderful teachers growing up in Canada with several teachers in my family. It was always something I knew I would love as a career, and I still do!
Why do you teach?
Every day I get to help little people to learn about the world, learn about themselves and learn how to get along with others. In my opinion, it’s the most important job on earth. I get to inspire students, be creative in my classroom, and collaborate with other professionals. I teach because I couldn't imagine doing anything else!
What's your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?
One of my most memorable teaching moments was when I was visiting a school I used to teach at in Canada, and one of my former students told me I was the reason she loves music. Her kind words about how much I inspired her and made a difference in her life were something I hold very dear. I think all teachers work hard every day to make learning engaging and meaningful for their students. It was so special to hear that I had helped launch her passion for music just by sharing what I love to do every day.
Have you received a special keepsake from your student/s that you treasure?
I have thousands of drawings, letters and kind words from students and their families over the years. I cherish these.
What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?
Teaching is a challenging and rewarding career. Every day is different and special. My advice for new teachers is to teach from the heart! The most important thing in this job is the students. Make meaningful connections with your students and get support from the other staff. Work smarter not harder and keep your work/life balance.
