Meet Kelly, a secondary school teacher from ACT with 20 years of teaching experience. Learn about what inspired Kelly to get into teaching, her stand out teaching moment and advice she gives to anyone considering a career in teaching.
What inspired you to get into teaching?
I wanted to help young people stay active and healthy. I believed I could motivate young people to be the best people they could be.
Why do you teach?
I love it. There are always interesting projects to work on. I have moved into a leadership position in the last few years and this has broadened opportunities to not only help and guide students but teachers and other leaders as well. I believe in the education system and that we can make a positive difference to young people and their futures.
What’s your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?
When I became an AITSL Highly Accomplished Teacher after 14 years in the profession, I couldn’t believe it. Gaining this qualification improved my teaching and learning and this was recognised by my school and department. When an assessor came to my school, to watch me teach, one of my students found the assessor in the corridor to ensure he sung my praises and listed all the ways I had helped him and the other members of the class. I was very embarrassed but also very appreciative that he would go out of his way to support me.
What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?
Remember you are going into the education profession – it is about education of the whole student, not just in one subject or area. Please know that our young people need you – they need you to inspire them, guide them and help them learn. When you see your students graduate or make a huge improvement, you are filled with pride and happiness for that student.
