Meet Hector, a primary and secondary school teacher from QLD. Learn about what inspired Hector to get into teaching, his stand out teaching moment and advice he gives to anyone considering a career in teaching.

What inspired you to get into teaching?

My teaching journey began in 2009 as an Aerodrome Meteorologist in Colombia when I volunteered for a social work program, teaching earth sciences and meteorology to Year 11 students. The students' enthusiastic response, expressing their desire to become meteorologists, revealed my potential to impact lives through education.

A life-threatening experience prompted a re-evaluation of my purpose, instilling a commitment to contribute positively to the world. Upon relocating to Australia, the realisation of becoming a teacher emerged as my chosen path. Fuelled by a deep-seated desire to make a lasting impact and positively influence students' lives, I embarked on a teaching career, merging my passion for education with the transformative experiences that shaped my journey.

Why do you teach?

Initially, my motivation to teach stemmed from a conviction that it was my calling. However, as years passed in the teaching profession, I discovered a deeper reason. I teach because I excel at building strong relationships with students, and creating a conducive environment that opens doors to effective learning. This has changed my life, giving it more purpose and meaning, and enabling me to lead a fulfilled life.

What’s your stand-out/most memorable teaching moment?

My standout teaching moment occurred in 2016 during my first-ever class, a composite group of Year 5 and 6 students. They affectionately dubbed me "Mr P", a moniker that became my trademark up until today. During a geography lesson with this class, when the bell rang for break, the students expressed a preference to stay in class rather than go for the break. Other teachers remarked that they had never witnessed a class making such a choice. This memorable moment marked a unique bond and enthusiasm for my career that remains etched in my teaching journey.

What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?

My advice is straightforward. Firstly, don't pursue teaching solely for monetary rewards or extended holidays. The intrinsic rewards lie in the impact you make on students. Prioritise building strong relationships; a supportive environment fosters effective learning and good behaviour. Additionally, prioritise your well-being; maintaining your mental and emotional health is essential to effectively care for the well-being of your students.
