Why do you teach?
As a Learning and Support teacher with a wellbeing focus, I show up to school every day with the intent and mission to create and hold space for students who find classrooms an overwhelming space, either academically, emotionally, or both. Using the environment and school garden, I aim to provide hands on learning experiences that focus on building deep connection, acceptance and confidence in each other and ourselves. I love embracing and gently unpacking complexity in students, always providing a safe and open space for students to be who they are, separate from their behaviour mistakes and any tricky times they experience. I love seeing a student’s self-worth grow and I value being part of that journey. I love the comradery of working with other teachers with the common goal of supporting students.
Have you received a special keepsake from your student/s that you treasure?
In my first year, a lovely parent wrote a letter about me and how much her child was loving school. My principal handed me the letter inside a ring binder with "Why I do it" written on the side. She said this was the first of many moments that I could collect in the folder throughout my career, and wherever I worked I could add to it, use it to reflect and always keep it in my desk drawer. Ten years later that binder is filled with letters, drawings, photos and stories that I have jotted down and I will continue to add to it as I continue to teach. I would encourage anyone to do the same.
What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?
Absolutely and humbly lean on those that have been in the career for any number of years before you. Observe as many other teachers as you can. Teachers are amazing. My favourite thing to do in my role as a Learning and Support teacher is to do class observations, as 9.8 times out of 10, I leave the classroom in awe of what teachers are able to do. Each in their own way, with their own strengths and weaknesses and mannerisms and passions.
