I am a performing arts teacher at a school where 71 per cent of students have a language background other than English, 9 per cent of students identify as Indigenous, and the remaining 29 per cent of students have an English language background.

This requires me to develop a relationship with each of the students, as my challenges are how I can teach a subject which they have probably never been exposed to and to respect their background and cultures. Through my performing arts classes, I allow each student to have fun with their performance, respecting their limits but also enable to challenge them as an active learner.

The outcomes that I’ve witnessed are how students are now confidently able to showcase their skills in acting, singing and dancing and these keepsakes are so important for me as these represent genuine appreciation from the students about my teaching.
