What inspired you to get into teaching?

My high school PE teacher; the impact and significant difference she made in my life inspired me to get into teaching. She fostered my love for sports and taught me the value of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Her encouragement and support were pivotal in my personal growth, showing me the profound impact a dedicated teacher can have on a student’s life.

This experience motivated me to combine my passion for sports with my desire to inspire and educate young people. Through teaching I aim to make a similar difference, instilling the same values and enthusiasm in my students that shaped my own journey. I believe that sports are a powerful tool for personal development, teaching essential life skills that go beyond the classroom.

Why do you teach?

I teach because education is about valuing and caring for every student. Often, we are a safe place for our students. Each student is unique and has a story to tell. My job is to foster their interests and potential, helping them become the best version of themselves. Sometimes, students don't recognise their own potential, and revealing that to them is the best part of teaching. If I can make a difference in a student’s day or life, whether by teaching them something new or providing life skills or advice to make them, I am fulfilled and happy. One of my goals as an educator is to help students see their own strengths and abilities, often before they recognise these themselves.

What's your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?

I have plenty of memorable moments in my teaching career, making it hard to pinpoint just one. I’ve had the privilege of coaching NSW Combined High Schools sporting teams, as well as regional and school teams. These experiences are special in many ways. Sport is more than physical activity; it teaches us about resilience, trust, communication, and friendship. Seeing students grow not only as athletes but as individuals is incredibly rewarding, and it's these moments that remind me why I love teaching.

Have you received a special keepsake from your student/s that you treasure?

The most treasured keepsakes I have are the small notes and letters students have written to me over the years. Sometimes they come from students you wouldn't expect, and other times from those you've closely worked with. Nevertheless, each one holds a special place in my heart. These heartfelt messages serve as a constant reminder of the lasting impact a teacher can have, and they inspire me to keep striving to make a difference every day. This is why I became a teacher and why I continue to be one. It's not the presents, chocolates, or small tokens, but the memories, conversations, and connections that mean the most to me.

What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?

There is a lot to love about teaching that is fulfilling and positive and I think that is important to remember. My advice is:

Build strong relationships with your students; understanding their individual needs fosters engagement and trust. Cultivate patience as progress can be slow and setbacks are inevitable. Stay flexible and adaptable and be ready to adjust your teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of your students. Commit to lifelong learning by staying updated with new strategies and educational research. Seek support and collaboration from colleagues. Maintain a healthy work-life balance to avoid burnout. Focus on your impact beyond academics, teaching life skills and fostering a positive environment. Embrace the joy of teaching, celebrating student growth and connection.
