Meet Hannah, a primary school teacher from the ACT. Learn about what inspired Hannah to get into teaching, her stand out teaching moment and advice she gives to anyone considering a career in teaching.

What inspired you to get into teaching?

The inspiration to become a teacher came from my own teachers in primary school and high school. The profound impact that my teachers had on me shaped me into the person and teacher I am today. I was fortunate enough to learn from dedicated and passionate teachers who not only imparted knowledge, but also nurtured my curiosity, encouraged my strengths, and supported my growth. I was blessed with a positive and rewarding education and I felt a calling to provide future generations with a similar experience.

When I was young I would assist my mum in setting up her classroom at the beginning of each school year. This provided me with a firsthand insight into the joys and challenges of teaching. Witnessing her dedication and seeing the positive impact she made on her students reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in education.

Why do you teach?

I teach because I believe in the profound impact teachers can have on shaping the future. Every day, I am driven by the opportunity to inspire and empower the next generation, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and values they need to succeed in their personal and professional lives. Witnessing the moment when a student grasps a new concept, or discovers their passion, fills me with immense satisfaction and purpose.

Ultimately, my greatest reward is knowing that I am playing a role in shaping students’ futures and helping them become confident, compassionate and capable individuals ready to make a positive difference in the world.

What’s your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?

One of my most stand out teaching moments is witnessing the delight on a child’s face when they understand a concept. Seeing their eyes light up and their expression moving from confusion to clarity is a feeling like no other. Their excitement is infectious and reaffirms the joy of teaching and the infinite potential of these young minds. It is moments like this that remind me of why I chose to be a teacher. These ‘aha’ moments not only indicate individual success, but also signify the curiosity, persistence and confidence that is being instilled in these young people.

What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?

For new teachers thinking about or just beginning their journey in this rewarding career, here’s my advice:

Firstly, never hesitate to ask for help. Teaching is a collaborative profession and seeking guidance and support from those around you and from experienced colleagues can provide invaluable insights.

Secondly, set healthy boundaries early on and adhere to them steadfastly. Establishing clear expectations for yourself and your students fosters a positive and respectful learning environment while preventing burnout.

Lastly, embrace the profession wholeheartedly, embracing the challenges and spontaneity of each day. Teaching is dynamic and no two days are alike. Embrace the unpredicatability, relish the moments of triumph and learn from the inevitable setbacks. Cultivate a mindset of resilience and adaptability, knowing that each day presents an opportunity for growth and making a lasting impact on the lives of your students.
