What inspired you to get into teaching?
Attending school as a child has always held a special place in my heart. While learning wasn't always a breeze, the allure of school extended beyond academics—friends, teachers, new experiences, and the thrill of overcoming challenges. I also discovered the joy of working with younger students which stemmed from the contagious curiosity, innocence, and wonder they brought into life. Being part of their foundational journey not only brought me joy but also enriched my own understanding of the world and would allow me to make a difference each day.
Why do you teach?
I teach because it's not just a job; it's a calling that I wholeheartedly love. I can't envision myself in any other profession. The driving force behind my teaching journey is an unwavering passion to kindle the fires of knowledge, mould young minds, and be a guiding presence in their explorations. My commitment to teaching is fuelled by a desire to ensure every child I teach recognises their brilliance and uniqueness. I firmly believe that each of them possesses something extraordinary to contribute to our world. Teaching, for me, is about fostering positive connections within a community of like-minded individuals who share a common goal; the well-being and growth of our children.
It's more than a profession; it's a daily opportunity to make a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of those who enter my classroom. Teaching is my way of leaving an enduring mark on the future of our world.
What’s your stand out/most memorable teaching moment?
The most memorable chapter of my teaching journey unfolds on the last day of each school year. It's a moment filled with deep emotions as I bid farewell to the children I've nurtured throughout the year. This is the time to reflect on their individual triumphs and challenges, recalling the moments of enlightenment and those instances when they grappled with learning obstacles. It's a powerful occasion to reminisce about their remarkable growth over the 40 weeks of the school year, acknowledging the strides they've taken. The last day serves as a platform to celebrate not only academic accomplishments but also the beautiful relationships forged with each student and their families. These cherished memories of the last day of school, etched vividly in my mind, span my entire 16-year teaching career, creating an enduring imprint.
What is your advice for new teachers or people considering a career in teaching?
Teaching isn’t for the faint hearted, it's tough, challenging work but it’s immensely rewarding and fulfilling work. If you seek a profession where you can laugh, dance, run, sing, smile, be playful, celebrate and make a meaningful difference each and every day, you should become a teacher! You won’t regret it, the rewards far surpass the challenges, making it an unforgettable and satisfying journey.
